"Agbekor" is a 400 year old warrior dance of the Ewe people of Ghana, performed to drums: "Axatse" (gourd shaker), "Gakogui" (double iron bell/timekeeper), "Kagan," (narrow drum/keeps a constant "off-beat"), "kidi" and "Sogo," (response drums), and the "Atimevu" (Master drum), which leads the ensemble. A horse's tail is held in one hand, as dancers gyrate hips and ribs in bird-like, contraction/release movements, front/back, and down to the earth, responding to "atsias" that signal changes.
